The difference between board and batten that looks built in and board and batten that looks glued on is arithmetic done before the first nail. Most failed installs picked a spacing that suited the lumber, usually 16 inches because that is where the studs are, and let the last bay fall wherever it landed. A 3-inch sliver of a bay next to a door casing tells everyone the wall was improvised.
Do it the other way around. Measure the wall, decide roughly how wide you want the gaps, then divide until the number comes out even.
The layout math
Take the finished wall width between the inside faces of whatever ends the run, usually casing to corner or corner to corner. Say the wall is 142 inches. Decide on batten width first: 1×3 stock is 2.5 inches actual, 1×4 is 3.5 inches, and ripped strips can be anything you want, with 2 to 2.5 inches reading best on an 8-foot wall.
You will have one batten at each end, so with a 2.5-inch batten, the number of battens is the number of gaps plus one. Try 8 gaps: 142 minus 9 battens at 2.5 inches each equals 142 minus 22.5, which is 119.5 inches of gap, divided by 8 equals 14.94 inches. Try 7 gaps: 142 minus 20 equals 122, divided by 7 equals 17.4 inches. Both work. Pick the one closer to the look you want and write the number on the wall.
Useful gap ranges, from experience rather than rule: 10 to 13 inches reads as tight, formal and slightly Victorian. 14 to 18 inches is the standard modern farmhouse spacing and forgives most wall widths. 20 to 24 inches reads as spare and contemporary and only holds up if the battens are at least 3.5 inches wide, because thin battens spread that far apart look like an afterthought.
Height is the second decision. Two-thirds wainscot height lands between 40 and 48 inches on an 8-foot ceiling, and the top rail should not split the wall exactly in half, which reads as an accident. Full-height battens running floor to ceiling make an 8-foot room feel taller and are the easier install, since there is no top rail to level across a wall that is not level. In a room with a 9 or 10-foot ceiling, wainscot can rise to 54 or 60 inches without looking heavy.
Material: what to use where
Primed MDF is the default for interior walls that stay dry. It is dead flat, has no grain to telegraph through paint, takes a sprayed finish beautifully, and costs less than clear lumber. It also swells irreversibly if it gets wet, so it does not belong within splash range of a tub, in a mudroom where wet boots lean against the wall, or anywhere below grade with a moisture problem.
Poplar is the choice when the wall will take abuse. It dents less than MDF, holds a crisp edge on an outside corner, and can be sanded after filling. It has a faint grain that shows under a high-sheen paint, so prime and sand between coats if you are using semi-gloss.
PVC and WPC trim stock is the answer for bathrooms, laundry rooms and mudrooms. It is unaffected by water, it cuts on the same saw as wood, and it accepts paint after a light scuff. The tradeoffs are that it expands and contracts more with temperature than wood, so long runs need slightly looser fastening, and it dents more easily than poplar under a chair back.
Thickness is not a free choice. Interior door casing is commonly around 11/16 inch thick. If you run 3/4-inch battens into a casing, the batten stands proud of the casing and there is no clean way to finish the joint. Either use 1/2-inch stock, which dies cleanly into standard casing, or plan to replace the casing with thicker stock at the same time.
Height and spacing, room by room
A dining room takes the most formal treatment in the house. Battens spaced 11 to 13 inches with a wainscot cap at 40 to 42 inches, painted a single deep color with the wall above, gives the room weight without shrinking it. The cap doubles as a shelf for nothing, which is the point; keep it 3/4 inch deep so chairs do not catch it.
A lounge or den is where full-height battens earn their keep. Run them floor to ceiling at 16 to 18 inches, paint the wall, the battens and the trim in one satin color in a mid-tone green, clay or charcoal, and the wall stops being a backdrop and becomes the room. Satin, not flat, because a shadowed vertical surface in low light needs the sheen to show the relief.
A bedroom wants the treatment behind the bed and nowhere else. Full-height battens at 14 to 16 inches across the headboard wall act as a built-in headboard for a bed with a low frame. Keep the color within two steps of the other walls; a hard contrast behind your head reads as busy at eye level from the doorway.
An entryway is a hook wall first and a design feature second. Wainscot at 54 to 60 inches with a real cap rail, hooks screwed into blocking behind the battens rather than into drywall anchors, and a durable finish. Semi-gloss here, since this is the wall that takes backpacks and wet sleeves.
A hallway is the one place tight spacing beats wide. Long, narrow walls seen at an angle compress visually, so 10 to 12-inch gaps keep the rhythm legible as you walk past. Wide spacing in a hallway just looks like random vertical sticks.
For a gallery wall, let the battens set the grid. Center each frame in a bay rather than spanning the battens, and pick a bay width that suits your frames: 16-inch gaps for standard 11×14 frames with a mat, 20 to 22 inches if you are hanging 16×20 and larger. Hanging art across a batten defeats both elements.
Tall ceilings change the proportions rather than the method. Above 10 feet, either raise the wainscot cap to 60 inches or run battens full height and add a horizontal rail at 84 inches so the wall has a break at door-head height. Battens 12 feet long with nothing crossing them look like scaffolding.
Install sequence
Find and mark the studs first, in pencil, along the full run. Batten positions that land on studs get nails into framing; the rest rely on adhesive plus short brads into drywall, which is fine for a batten that carries no load.
Level a line for the cap rail with a laser or a 4-foot level, and check the floor before you trust it. Floors slope. If the floor drops 1/2 inch over 12 feet, a level cap rail will show a wedge-shaped gap at the baseboard, and you have to decide which one to follow. In a room where the cap rail runs into a window stool or a door head, follow level. In a room with no reference, split the difference.
Run the baseboard first if you are replacing it, then the cap rail, then the vertical battens cut to fit between them. Cutting verticals to fit is more forgiving than trying to slot a rail on top of pre-set battens. Use construction adhesive in a thin serpentine bead, not a heavy one that squeezes out at the edges, and 18-gauge brads at 12 to 16 inches.
Electrical boxes need attention before, not after. If a batten or the cap rail covers part of an outlet or switch box, the box has to be brought out flush with the new finished surface using a box extender. This is a code requirement, not a preference, and it is also the difference between a cover plate that sits flat and one that rocks. Plan the layout so battens miss outlets entirely where you can.
Finish in this order: fill nail holes with lightweight spackle, sand, caulk every inside corner and the joint between batten and wall with paintable latex caulk, then prime any bare cuts, then paint. Caulking after painting leaves a shiny bead that never matches. Skipping caulk entirely leaves hairline shadow lines along every batten that show up the moment sunlight rakes across the wall.
Mistakes that cost real money
Choosing spacing to match stud locations rather than the wall dimension is the first, and it produces the uneven end bay that gives everything away. Second is cutting all the verticals to one length off the first measurement: wall heights vary, and a batten 3/16 inch short leaves a gap at the cap rail that caulk cannot honestly close.
Third is hanging MDF in a bathroom below the 4-foot line. It will look perfect for two years and then swell along the bottom edge where the mop and the shower spray reach it, and swollen MDF cannot be repaired, only replaced. Fourth is running battens over a wall with a heavy texture without skimming it first; the batten sits on the high points and rocks, and adhesive squeezing into the low spots does not fix that.
The last one is finish sheen. Flat paint on a relief surface kills the shadow lines that make the treatment visible in the first place. Eggshell is the minimum, satin is better, and in a high-traffic room semi-gloss on the battens with eggshell on the field gives you contrast between the two planes even in one color.
